More Samsung phones get AirDrop support, but there’s a catch

A few days ago, Samsung rolled out a software update for the Galaxy S26 series that upgraded Quick Share with support for Apple’s AirDrop, allowing users to exchange files with iPhones, iPads, and Macs more easily than ever. At the time, it was unclear whether the company would bring this feature to older devices. Well, there’s some good news.

Samsung is now extending it beyond the Galaxy S26 lineup — including the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S23, Galaxy S24, Galaxy S25, and Galaxy Z Fold 7 — not through full software updates, but via updates to Quick Share and its modules. However, there’s a catch. While the updates bring the feature, it isn’t functional for some users yet.

On X, Tarun Vats reported that Samsung is rolling out updates to Quick Share and Quick Share Connectivity for older devices, which bring the ability to share files with Apple devices via AirDrop. Users quickly installed these updates, which were available on several phones, including the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S23, Galaxy S24, and Galaxy Z Fold 7, and some even received a Quick Share Agent update. However, what followed turned out to be disappointing.

After installing the updates, some users could see the ‘Share with Apple devices’ option, while others couldn’t. Unfortunately, even those who could access it report that it doesn’t work — nearby Apple devices don’t appear, and their Samsung phones don’t show up in the AirDrop menu either. A few users who initially couldn’t see the feature say updating their device firmware, along with Google Play System and Google Play Services, eventually made the option appear.

Based on user reports, it appears Samsung is enabling AirDrop support on older devices not just through Quick Share and its module updates, but also via a server-side switch—though it isn’t fully functional yet. Hopefully, the company will roll out further updates to Quick Share and its components, or broader software updates, to get it working properly soon.
